Butter or Margarine

By Sheila Kennedy-robinson of Sounds from Source

BUTTER OR MARGARINE
Do you know the difference between Butter and Margarine? Most people have no idea at all and are led into their choices either by taste, habit, advertising or sheer convenience [Margarine spreads more easily than Butter]
Now they both have the same amount of calories per gram. Butter has a slightly higher level of saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams for Margarine.
It gets interesting when we realise that eating margarine can increase the risk of heart disease in women by 53% compared to eating the same amount of butter. These facts are courtesy of a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter also increases the absorption of many of the nutrients in other foods.
Butter also has many nutritional benefits for us where margarine has only a few, and those are because they are added, not that they occur naturally. Butter also tastes so much better than margarine, and it can enhance the flavours of other foods. Butter has been known and used for many centuries, where as margarine has been around for less than 100 years.
And now, let’s look at the facts for Margarine.
Margarine is very high in trans fatty acids, these triple risk of coronary heart disease, and also increase total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) it also lowers HDL cholesterol, [the good cholesterol].
Margarine increases the risk of cancers by up to five fold; it is also known to lower the quality of breast milk. It decreases immune response, and also decreases insulin response.
So we have a good case for the butter versus margarine debate, however if we look further there are some even more pertinent facts that most people will not know.
Margarine which is chemically manufactured is only one molecule away from being ‘Plastic’ and margarine is initially black when it is produced however it is dyed a yellow colour, and depending on the brand how yellow, to make it resemble butter, and there fore be more attractive to the consumer.
Now this would be enough for me to avoid margarine for life, as well as anything else which has been ‘hydrogenated’ [or had hydrogen added to change its molecular structure]
So we have a natural versus a ‘man made product’, however you may still need more convincing, and this is a great ‘science experiment’ for the young people in your life.
When you go to your shopping complex or mall, purchase a tub of margarine and leave it outside in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things, there aren’t any flies around it , not even those little fruit flies will be attracted to it) and it wont rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value, and nothing will grow on it...even micro-organisms will not find a home to grow.
So why is this? Remember I said to you earlier it is one molecule away from plastic, so it nearly is plastic. Would you melt your recyclable bottles and put those on your steamed potatoes? Or will you use the “real thing”.
